Listen, even travel planners make mistakes. The good news? Every “oops” moment turns into a better strategy next time. Here are a few of my personal family travel mishaps that will (hopefully) make you smile and help you avoid them on your next trip.
🎒 1. Overpacking Like We Were Moving Abroad
I used to think I was being prepared. Turns out, lugging four “just in case” outfits per kid through the airport is… not a vibe. These days, I focus on versatile outfits and trust laundry services or quick washes when needed.
🗓️ 2. Packing Too Much into a Single Day
Raise your hand if you’ve tried to “do it all” on vacation 🙋♀️. It always sounds good in the itinerary—but kids move slower, naps happen, and gelato detours are mandatory. Now, I plan one big activity per day and leave room for the magic to unfold.
✈️ 3. Expecting Too Much on the First Jet-Lagged Day
I once built a full sightseeing day into our arrival schedule after an overseas flight. Spoiler: we lasted about 90 minutes before crashing. Now, arrival days = gentle walks, early dinners, and low expectations.
📱 4. Limiting Tablet Time on Travel Days
My kids get zero screen time at home—but on travel days? Unlimited = peace. The moment I let go of “rules” mid-flight, everything got smoother. PBS Kids + Khan Academy Kids = gold. Don’t fight it. Embrace it.
Travel mistakes happen. But with each one, you get better, smarter, and a little more seasoned.
