Family vacations don’t have to break the bank. You can travel smart without giving up comfort and conveniences – because let’s be real, moms, you don’t need extra stress on vacation. I do believe there is a time and a place for splurgy vacations where you soak in all the bougie extras that are included in some of the best hotels in the world. But you can also find some great deals that still feel like they’re honoring your vacation budget. Here are some affordable family vacations and budget-friendly tips that will help you plan your next family trip.

Choose the Right Destination and Timing
There are many locations that naturally offer more value for families. Think all-inclusive resorts, national parks and destinations with free kid-friendly attractions. Places like Mexico, Costa Rica, Orlando (beyond Disney!) and Hawaii during off-peak seasons can be great options where you get a lot of value for your money.
Travel During Off-Peak Times
This is a tough one if you’ve got kids in school, but if there is any option to avoid holidays and school breaks, then go for it! Shoulder seasons (right before or after peak travel times) offer better deals and fewer crowds (especially in national parks).
If off-peak just isn’t an option, then try to be creative with school schedules and see if you can at least depart or return a few days beyond the typical school break. Booking early becomes especially important as well as flexibility with your destination to travel to the deals.
Book Smarter, Not Harder
Use Google Flights price tracking feature to watch for great deals. Set an alert when prices drop and be ready to purchase when they hit a good price. Try to be flexible with your departure dates and utilize nearby airports.
Consider booking packages that can often offer savings.
Lastly, credit card points and airline miles can be a great savings to help cover the costs of some aspects of your trip. Since we’ve been using points and miles, we’ve booked over $70,000 worth of travel. Not sure how to get started here? I can help you learn how!
Save on Accommodations without Sacrificing Comfort
Book resorts or hotels with free breakfast to help save on food costs. Look into rooms with club access that include food as well. Consider hotel rooms or vacation rentals with extra space and kitchens to cut down on eating out. Be sure to read all the reviews and fine print of vacation rentals, as I’ve seen a lot of negative experiences lately. Many resorts offer free nights, kids-stay-free deals, or discounts for longer stays. Consider joining email lists to get the best deals straight from the resorts.
Smart Ways to Cut Costs on Food and Activities
Eat like a local and save big! Skip overpriced tourist restaurants and opt instead to visit local markets, food trucks and bakeries instead. Be sure to pack snacks to help with between-meal hunger and cranky kids. Utilize the hotel fridge or rental kitchen to shop for groceries. Have Instacart deliver to your hotel to have easy breakfast and lunch options on hand.
Find Free & Low-Cost Activities
With a little research, you can find free walking tours, local playgrounds and city passes that bundle attractions at a discount. Many destinations offer free or discounted days at museums or attractions or offer free kids admission with a paying adult. Prioritize beach days, hiking and free cultural events. Choose 1-2 pricey excursions if they’re a must-see.
Extra Hacks to Stretch Your Travel Budget
If you’re not using travel credit card points or cashback cards, you’re leaving money on the table! There are some great options and again, I’d be happy to show you where to get started! Some credit cards offer perks like free checked bags, travel insurance, free TSA Pre-Check and more!
Pack smart and keep your baggage fees to a minimum. I talk a lot about packing smart and utilizing a few different strategies to always pack what you need and not what you don’t. Reusable water bottles, travel-sized essentials and pre-packed family travel kits help ensure you’ve got what you need without lots of extra stuff.
Stress-free, Budget-friendly Family Travel IS Possible!
You don’t have to choose between saving money and having a comfortable, fun family vacation–you can have both! The key is having strategic planning, knowing where to cut costs and where to invest for the best experience.
