Kids Raised by Travel: Why It’s Worth the Effort- Part II

A few weeks ago, I shared four of the reasons why we think it’s worth the energy and effort to travel with young children. Here are 4 (more) reasons why we are committed to this with our little ones:

1. Observing Adults Handle Stressful Situations

One of the unexpected benefits of traveling with kids is that they get to see their adults in action—particularly in stressful situations. Whether it’s dealing with a lost passport or navigating a foreign healthcare system, kids observe how their parents handle challenges, and this modeling teaches them how to manage stress in their own lives.

2. Practicing Discomfort in a Safe Environment

Travel often involves stepping out of comfort zones, whether it’s trying unfamiliar food, sleeping in a different bed, or navigating an unknown city. By practicing discomfort in a controlled, safe environment, kids build resilience and learn to embrace uncertainty—an essential life skill.

3. It’s Not About the Memory; It’s About the Skills

Some might argue that kids won’t remember the experience, so it’s not worth the effort or the money. But travel isn’t just about the memory of a location; it’s about the skill and character-building they gain along the way. Patience, entertaining themselves on long flights, sleeping in new places, trying new foods, and hearing different languages—these skills will transfer to every aspect of their life, regardless of whether they remember the trip to the aquarium or the fun hotel pool.

4. Raising Resilient, Confident Adults

Kids raised by travel develop grit, determination, and confidence. They become adults who value similar experiences and possess the skills needed to navigate challenging circumstances. Traveling kids grow into resilient adults who are not afraid to take risks, explore the unknown, and adapt to whatever life throws at them.

Raising kids through travel is one of the best investments you can make in their future. The experiences, skills, and values they gain from exploring the world are worth every bit of effort and expense. Our kids are going to grow into adults who are adaptable, culturally aware, and confident in their ability to navigate the complexities of life—qualities that are invaluable in today’s ever-changing world. So join us in packing your bags and taking your kids on the journey; the world is their classroom, and the lessons they learn will last a lifetime.
