Traveling with Toddlers: The Ultimate Survival Guide

The idea of traveling with a toddler can feel overwhelming—nap schedules, picky eating, meltdowns in public places. You might wonder if it’s even worth the hassle. But let me tell you, as a mom who has been there, it absolutely is. With the right preparation, your family vacation can be full of joy, discovery, and moments that make all the planning worth it.

Why Traveling with Toddlers is Worth It

I still remember our first big trip with my daughter. We took her to Disneyland with my parents.  I had spent weeks obsessing over every detail and worrying (a lot)—what to pack, how to keep her entertained, whether she would sleep in a hotel. But when I saw her eyes light up as she met Mickey Mouse for the first time, I knew it was all worth it. Those little moments—watching your child experience something new, hearing their giggles as they explore a new place—are what make family travel unforgettable.

Yes, there will be challenges. But with a little planning and the right mindset, you can minimize the stress and focus on what really matters: making lifelong memories.

Essential Tips for Traveling with Toddlers

After countless family trips, I’ve learned what works (and what definitely doesn’t). Here are my must-know tips for a smoother, more enjoyable trip with little ones.

Plan Around Their Routine (But Stay Flexible!)

While it’s tempting to pack your itinerary with activities, toddlers do best when their basic needs—sleep, food, and downtime—are met. If your child still naps, try to schedule travel times or low-key activities around those windows. However, flexibility is key. Sometimes, naps happen in a stroller or a carrier, and that’s okay.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

It’s easy to go overboard when packing for a toddler, but the goal is to bring essentials without overloading yourself. A few must-haves:

  • A lightweight stroller or baby carrier for easy mobility
  • A small bag of travel-friendly toys, books, and favorite comfort items
  • Plenty of snacks
  • Extra outfits and wipes for inevitable messes

I’ve ordered extra diapers and things we forgot from Instacart and had delivered to our hotel. It’s possible to get things you need when you arrive! Don’t worry if you didn’t remember it all!

Choose Toddler-Friendly Accommodations

Not all hotels and resorts are created equal when it comes to traveling with young kids. Look for places with:

  • Kid-friendly pools or splash pads
  • Crib or pack-and-play availability
  • Easy access to restaurants or grocery stores
  • Walkability to major attractions to cut down on extra travel time
  • Club-Access rooms or free breakfast to make a few meals easier

Prepare for Flights Like a Pro

Air travel with a toddler can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be miserable. A few tricks that have saved us:

  • Board as late as possible to minimize time spent sitting on the plane
  • Bring new (but small) toys or activities to keep them entertained
  • Have a sippy cup or pacifier ready for takeoff and landing to ease ear pressure
  • Be open to some extra screen time if needed

Most importantly, remember that no flight lasts forever. If things get tough, take a deep breath—soon, you’ll be at your destination, ready to enjoy your trip.

Making the Most of Your Family Vacation

Once you arrive, give yourself permission to slow down. Toddlers thrive on simple joys—a walk on the beach, chasing birds in a park, splashing in the pool. You don’t need a packed itinerary for the trip to be meaningful. In fact, the less structured your first trips are, the better! Practice traveling together before tackling ALL the sites at your destination.

Most of all, embrace the imperfect moments. There will be meltdowns. There will be detours. There will be long nights when someone has the flu. But those moments are just as much a part of the adventure as the picture-perfect ones.
